Canon USA & Affiliates Engineer III (Electrical) in Newport News, Virginia


Supports new product development activities in a Product Development / Research and Development environment by researching and developing new components/assemblies, methods, and/or processes utilizing engineering principles. Responsible for product lifecycle development from concept to production.


  • Creates, maintains, and drives detailed project schedules across multiple disciplines. Leads projects and/or small teams.

  • Confers with division management, production, QA staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, reliability & manufacturability to new and existing products. Confers with research personnel and/or the customer to clarify or resolve problems of design.

  • Prepares proposals (including recommended suppliers, parts pricing, alternative implementation strategies, and timeline/schedule) for submission to customer. Assists other design staff with answering technical questions during proposal meetings.

  • Creates validation test plans for printed circuit boards (PCB) to determine proper functionality. Utilizes various tools (oscope, logic analyzer, etc.) to test different elements of board. Collects and analyzes data to determine validity of board. Makes modifications and retests board as necessary.

  • Designs products for electromagnetic capability (EMC) and safety. Oversees third party testing, ensuring test runs smoothly. Utilizes test results to determine necessary modifications to unit.

  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data for complex processes and draws appropriate conclusions.

  • Reviews technical reports prepared by less experienced Engineers and provides feedback.

  • Designs analog and digital circuits and PCB's for products. Develops complex layout of board and determines necessary components in order to make unit operational.

  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data for complex processes and draws appropriate conclusions.

  • Evaluates engineering test results for possible application to development of systems or other uses.

  • Mentors and trains less experienced Engineers.

  • May travel to customer site as needed for setup/repair of electrical system within unit.

  • May travel for design reviews, customer meetings, trade shows, or other field research.

  • May be assigned additional duties and/or special projects.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 5-8 years’ experience in research and development, medical or related field.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Ability to create and present presentations and/or technical papers to management within and outside of Canon Virginia.

  • Fluent in an electronic CAD systems (Altium, including schematic capture and layout.

  • Experience with and broad knowledge of mixed-signal circuit design.

  • Proficient in PCB design and layout.

  • Experience with EMC design and layout.

  • Experience with embedded systems including hardware and standard interface protocols.

  • Experience with embedded C and C++ programming languages preferred, but not required.

  • Ability to solder for assembly and rework of prototype circuit boards.

  • Requires strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in a project team environment.

  • May have to travel.

  • May have to work overtime and may be assigned to other shifts based on company needs.
